Frequently asked questions
Plywood, delivery, cutting and ordering, answered.
Choosing plywood
Which plywood should I use outdoors or in wet areas?
Marine plywood is the safest choice for anything that gets wet or stays wet, such as boats, wet rooms and exterior joinery. BS1088 marine ply is made for permanent exposure to water. For exterior jobs that aren't submerged, WBP-bonded hardwood plywood is a cheaper option.
What's the best plywood for furniture and cabinets?
Birch plywood. It has more, thinner plies and a void-free core, so cut and routed edges stay clean and it holds screws well. Our Latvian BB/BB birch is good on both faces, so it can be painted, lacquered or left on show.
What should I use for floors, roofs and sheathing?
OSB3 or hardwood structural plywood. 18mm is the usual thickness for floors and roof decks; 9mm or 11mm suits wall sheathing and hoarding. For loft floors and mezzanines, 18mm tongue and groove OSB locks together on all four edges.
What plywood is used for trailer floors and ramps?
Phenolic film faced plywood. Buffalo Board has a smooth, wipe-clean face for van linings and formwork, while anti-slip mesh and hex pattern boards add grip for trailer and horsebox floors, ramps and scaffold decks. 18mm is the usual floor thickness.
What size are your plywood sheets?
Most sheets are the standard 2440 x 1220mm (8ft x 4ft). A few products come in other sizes, such as 2500 x 1220mm or 3050 x 1220mm, and each product page shows its sheet size.
Grades and standards
What do plywood grades like BB/BB or B/BB mean?
The two letters grade the front and back faces. B is the better face, with few or no repairs; BB is sound and smooth with small, neatly patched knots. BB/BB birch is good enough on both sides to leave on show.
What is the difference between WBP and marine plywood?
WBP (weather and boil proof) describes the waterproof glue. Marine plywood uses that glue too, but adds durable hardwood veneers and a core with no voids, so water can't get in over time. All marine ply is WBP; not all WBP ply is marine grade.
What does OSB3 mean?
OSB3 is the grade of oriented strand board made for load-bearing use in humid conditions, to EN 300. It's the grade to use for floors, roofs and timber-frame sheathing; OSB2 is only for dry interiors.
Do you sell fire retardant boards?
Yes. We stock fire retardant plywood rated Euroclass B and fire retardant MDF, for fit-outs where the specification calls for controlled fire performance. Check the product page for the rating before you order.

Cutting
Do you cut plywood to size?
Yes. We cut sheets to size before they're delivered or collected, free of charge on standard cuts. Add your cutting list in the order notes at checkout, or call the yard to go through it first.
Can I return sheets that have been cut to size?
Sheets cut to your measurements are made to order, so they can't be returned for a change of mind. They're still covered if they're faulty or not as described. Please check your cutting list carefully before ordering.
